Press Statement: Social Justice Coalition to march and deliver sanitation petition to City of Cape Town

Tomorrow, 24 May 2016, the Social Justice Coalition (SJC) will march and deliver a petition with demands to the City of Cape Town. This is ahead of Mayor Patricia de Lille’s 2016/17 budget speech in council on 25 May 2016...

The petition, signed by more than 5000 Khayelitsha residents, is calling for the Mayor to commit to implementing long-term sanitation infrastructure in informal settlements across Cape Town. The text of the petition in both Xhosa and English is available here.

Sanitation provision in informal settlements requires a shift from treating informal settlements as temporary, emergency environments, to dealing with the reality that they are long standing, established communities that require permanent infrastructure and long-term planning.

We demand safe, clean and dignified sanitation services!

The SJC’s organisational submission on the draft 2016/17 budget can be read here.

Please join us tomorrow.
