Researcher - Urban Policy

Urban Policy Researcher

The SJC is seeking to employ an Urban Policy Researcher focusing on our campaigns against spatial apartheid.
 
The successful applicant’s responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting evidence based research for advocacy and litigation on informal settlement upgrading and land tenure in South Africa

  • Analysing and preparing a range of evidence, data, policy, and law

  • Contributing to the development of the SJC’s campaign strategy and policy positions

  • Undertaking various types of applied primary and secondary research

  • Creating relevant campaign material for SJC members and activists

  • Building relationships and undertaking strategic engagement with allies in both civil society and the state

  • Conducting seminars, workshops, and events in support of activists both within and outside of the SJC

 Applicants should possess the following skills and experience:

  • A commitment to social justice

  • Experience working with activist organisations and social movements

  • Adaptable and flexible during pressurised times

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • High level research and writing skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field e.g. urban planning, politics, law (a post-graduate degree is advantageous)

  • Ability to think creatively, take initiative, and produce applied research

  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to rapidly pull together complex information

  • Be able to work both independently and as part of a team

The successful candidate will be based at the SJC’s office in Khayelitsha, Cape Town on a full-time basis. We are seeking to fill this position beginning immediately.
