Urban Policy Researcher
The SJC is seeking to employ an Urban Policy Researcher focusing on our campaigns against spatial apartheid.
The successful applicant’s responsibilities will include:
Conducting evidence based research for advocacy and litigation on informal settlement upgrading and land tenure in South Africa
Analysing and preparing a range of evidence, data, policy, and law
Contributing to the development of the SJC’s campaign strategy and policy positions
Undertaking various types of applied primary and secondary research
Creating relevant campaign material for SJC members and activists
Building relationships and undertaking strategic engagement with allies in both civil society and the state
Conducting seminars, workshops, and events in support of activists both within and outside of the SJC
Applicants should possess the following skills and experience:
A commitment to social justice
Experience working with activist organisations and social movements
Adaptable and flexible during pressurised times
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
High level research and writing skills
Bachelor’s degree in a related field e.g. urban planning, politics, law (a post-graduate degree is advantageous)
Ability to think creatively, take initiative, and produce applied research
Excellent analytical skills and ability to rapidly pull together complex information
Be able to work both independently and as part of a team
The successful candidate will be based at the SJC’s office in Khayelitsha, Cape Town on a full-time basis. We are seeking to fill this position beginning immediately.
