RESEARCHER - URBAN POLICY

The SJC is seeking to employ a Researcher on Urban Policy based within the SJC’s Local Government Programme focusing on the SJC’s campaigns against spatial Apartheid.
 
The successful applicant’s responsibilities will include:

- Analyzing and preparing a range of evidence, data, policy and law for the campaigns of the LG programme
- Assisting in evidence based research, advocacy, litigation, and submissions
- Contributing to the development of the SJC’s campaign strategy and policy positions
- Undertaking various types of applied primary and secondary research for the LG programme
- Creating relevant materials for the SJC”s campaigns
- Building relationships with partner organisation and undertaking strategic engagement with a variety of stakeholders including  government
- Providing general organisational support for the programme where required
- Conducting seminars, workshops, and other private and public events

Applicants should possess the following skills and experience:

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- High level research and writing skills
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field e.g. an urban planning background and a post-graduate degree are advantageous
- Creative abilities to undertake and produce applied research
- Ability to think creatively and take initiative
- Excellent analytical skills and ability to rapidly pull together complex information
- Ability to work under pressure, perform multiple tasks, and meet tight deadlines
- Be able to work both independently and as part of a team
- Good proficiency with computer programmes and online research
- Adaptable and flexible during pressurised times
- Experience working with community organisations preferable
- A commitment to social justice

The successful candidate will be based at the SJC’s office in Khayelitsha, Cape Town on a full-time basis. We are ideally seeking to fill this position beginning March 2017.

FINANCE AND OFFICE ADMINISTRATOR

SJC seeks to employ a Finance and Office Administrator, based in Khayelitsha, Cape Town.
The Finance and Office Administrator will be based in the Operations Department and reports to the Operations Manager.
 
JOB DESCRIPTION

Implement the basic financial administration and financial record keeping of the SJC:

- Implement financial processes and systems under the guidance of the Operations Manager
- Process requisitions and payments and prepare them for payment
- Implement the financial filing - and record keeping systems with the Operations Manager and ensure that requisitions, invoices,  
  and receipts are compiled and filed systematically and efficiently
- Prepare financial files for the SJC’s bookkeepers, including the coding of expenses where necessary

Perform the day to day office administration of the SJC which includes: 

- Undertake reception duties and ensure there are adequate supplies of stationery and general office equipment
- Coordinate the effective running of office systems including, printing, IT, and phones
- Liaise with service providers and the building management and coordinate servicing, building issues, and equipment repairs when  
  necessary
- Implement all necessary security protocols including the proper regulation of access cards
- Manage incoming and outgoing mail and courier services when necessary
- Ensure that proper administrative files are kept and maintained
- Keep and manage an updated asset register and asset register system

BRANCH AND POLITICAL EDUCATOR

The SJC is seeking to employ a Branch and Political Educator based within the SJC’s General Secretary’s Office.

The successful applicant’s responsibilities will include to:

- Run day to day education programmes at SJC branches;
- Prepare materials and lessons for the education programmes in branches. This will include doing research, writing, and
  preparation of education materials in consultation with programme researchers and the Education Coordinator;
- Prepare and run workshops and presentations for partners and community members if and when required by the SJC and in
  coordination with SJC Organisers;
- Assist with broader education for branches, including workshops, events, seminars, debates, documentary screenings, and d
  discussions;
- Assist with the circulation of material such as articles, publications, documentaries, etc.;
- Attend relevant SJC events, seminars or other events related to SJC programme work and campaigns and/or represent the SJC at
  those events.

Applicants should possess the following skills and experience:

- Excellent facilitation skills and teaching ability;
- Experience working in community organisations and/or social movements;
- Good grasp of politics and current affairs;
- Good command of Xhosa writing and speaking essential;
- Proficient with computers;
- Logistics experience;
- A commitment to social justice;
- Willingness to take on additional responsibilities if necessary.
