The SJC is currently advertising for two positions:

Local Government Programme Head

 

The Social Justice Coalition (SJC) is a democratic, mass-based social movement that campaigns for the advancement of the constitutional rights to life, dignity, equality, freedom and safety for all people, but especially those living in informal settlements across South Africa.

The SJC seeks to employ a Programme Head for the SJC Local Government (LG) Programme. The Programme leads on our campaigns against spatial apartheid.

 

The Programme Head forms part of the senior management team of the SJC.

 

The successful applicant’s responsibilities will include:

 

  • Providing political and strategic leadership for the Programme;

  • Building and leading our campaigns with the elected leadership of the SJC;

  • Managing the day-to-day campaign work of the Programme. This includes its: mass-based organising, mobilising, strategic litigation, and advocacy;

  • Building of strategy and tactics;

  • Contributing to the growth and strengthening of the SJC as a movement;

  • Overseeing the development of applied research and education curricula related to the campaigns, particularly on informal settlements, land and local government budgets;

  • Building and maintaining networks of allies inside the state and within civil society;

  • Providing effective management and development of staff and staff responsibilities within the Programme;

  • Acting as spokesperson for the Programme and managing the Programme’s media engagement together with the General Secretary’s office.

 

 Applicants should possess the following skills and experience:

 

  • A commitment to social justice;

  • Experience working with activist organisations and social movements;

  • Adaptable and flexible during pressurised times;

  • Excellent understanding of politics and ability to apply that understanding to real situations and questions;

  • Ability to problem solve and deal creatively and rapidly with issues as they arise;

  • Very high level of organisational and systems management abilities including strategic thinking;

  • Ability to deal with conflict situations;

  • Proven management and leadership ability and experience;

  • Initiative and ability to drive processes throughout the organisation;

  • Excellent analytical skills;

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;

  • Be able to work in a collective and inspire and lead a team;

  • Tertiary qualification in a related field (a post-graduate degree is advantageous).

 

The successful candidate will be based at the SJC’s office in Khayelitsha, Cape Town on a full-time basis. We are seeking to fill this position beginning in July 2017.

Education and Curriculum Coordinator

 

The Education and Curriculum Coordinator is responsible for the overall coordination of the SJC’s political and campaign education programmes. The Education and Curriculum Coordinator is based within the General Secretary’s Office.

 

The successful applicant’s responsibilities will include:

  • Coordinating and designing the SJC’s political and campaign education programmes. This includes:

    • Designing curricula for the programmes;

    • Strengthening the political engagement of branches, members, and staff;

    • Developing course material with branch educators;

    • Undertaking relevant research and writing.

 

  • Overseeing and coordinating the work of branch educators in consultation with the senior management team;

  • Implementing and coordinating branch programmes and education activities, including training workshops, seminars, documentary screenings, and community workshops;

  • Teach courses for SJC branches and members and facilitate political dialogue within membership and staff under the guidance of the General Secretary’s Office;

  • Creating relevant campaign and education material for SJC members and activists;

  • Compile and distribute resources for staff and branches, such as newspaper articles, documentaries, and books;

  • Develop and maintain relationships with organisations and structures interested in community education.

 

Requirements:

  • A commitment to social justice;

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field;

  • Excellent facilitation skills and proven teaching ability;

  • Experience working with activist organisations and social movements;

  • Excellent grasp of politics, as well as local, national, and international current affairs;

  • Ability to engage critically with political and historical texts and to teach these in accessible ways;

  • Ability to coordinate and manage multiple staff, logistics, and activities;

  • Ability to think creatively, take initiative and work under pressure, independently and in a team;

  • Good command of Xhosa writing and speaking essential;

  • Proficient with computers.

 

The successful candidate will be based at the SJC’s office in Khayelitsha, Cape Town on a full-time basis. We are seeking to fill this position beginning in July 2017.
